Sticky bun french toast – Society Hill Society

Sticky bun french toast - Society Hill Society
SHS sticky buns, honey ice cream, pecan maple syrup. $12
Society Hill Society, Philadelphia PA

This dish was tasty, BUT I could not get over how SLOW the service was! Omg, we waited SO frickin’ long between everything – getting seated, having the waitress take our drink order, her bringing us our drinks, taking our food order, finally getting our food, waiting for the check, etc, etc! This was the longest I’ve spent waiting at a restaurant with nothing actually happening. What is wrong with these people?!? I was not impressed…

Sauteed foie gras and grilled eel – Morimoto

Sauteed foie gras and grilled eel - Morimoto
Sake meyer lemon, asian pear, sansho pepper. $26
Morimoto, Philadelphia PA

Wow, this was delicious! Very rich, but delicious and interesting to eat. The foie gras and eel were perfectly cooked, but what really interested me was the sake meyer lemon jelly blobs. They were bright and fresh and really helped to cut the richness of the proteins. The Asian pear added crunch so you got a perfect bite with all the components together.

Borscht tartare – Abe Fisher

Borscht tartare - Abe Fisher
Trout roe, sour cream, onion potato chips, hard-cooked egg. Happy hour $7
Abe Fisher, Philadelphia PA

This tasted great and was really fun to eat with the potato chips. The dish was really just borscht beets made to look like a plate of tartare – genius! And delicious! And my bartender/server rocked!

Savory rugelach - Abe Fisher
Savory rugelach: chicken schmaltz and dill with toasted sesame seed & black olive and plum butter with poppy seed. Complimentary
OMG, these were frickin’ amazing! I wish I could have bought a box of these to take with me.

Morimoto sashimi – Morimoto

Morimoto sashimi - Morimoto
Five assorted sashimi with seven sauces. $25
Morimoto, Philadelphia PA

I’m gonna start by saying that this sashimi assortment was very good. Everything was fresh and tasted great, and all the different sauces were fun and so different. As for the front desk, I thought they were a mess. I had a reservation but still had to wait 20 minutes only to be sat at an empty counter (as you can see from the pic). Ok, I don’t see why I couldn’t have sat immediately there, but I guess they like to give the illusion that their restaurant is uber exclusive and SO busy. Um, you have an empty counter so you’re not THAT busy and you should just seat it! I hate fake exclusivity.

Raw and marinated bass – Abe Fisher

Raw and marinated bass - Abe Fisher
Avocado cream cheese, pomegranate-caraway vinaigrette. Happy hour $7
Abe Fisher, Philadelphia PA

Mmm, this was SO good! I loved the bass both ways and they were prepared perfectly. The vinaigrette tasted great and wasn’t overpowering as to cover up the flavor of the bass. The service here was also fabulous (unlike some restaurants like a.kitchen).

Grilled prawns – a.kitchen

Grilled prawns - a.kitchen
Creamy grits, basque peppers, radish. $16
a.kitchen, Philadelphia PA

This restaurant was a HOT MESS! I ate at 5 different places that day, from cheesesteak to Jewish food to donuts to high end sushi, and this place was the worst! The service was awful for one thing. The hostess was a bit clueless (but nice enough I guess). Then the food! I got 2 super dried up prawns over bland grits with some greens thrown on top for sixteen bucks?! Is this a joke? Am I being punked right now! I ate one prawn and left the rest because it was unpalatable, and that dressing was overly acidic. But apparently they don’t really care if you don’t like your food because they’re gonna get paid regardless. Ugh, this was a complete failure.

Steamed mussels – Hank’s Oyster Bar

Steamed mussels - Hank's Oyster Bar
Tomato and garlic seasonal preparation. $15
Hank’s Oyster Bar, Washington DC

Ugh, the mussels had too much grit! It was afraid of chipping my teeth halfway through the bowl. They definitely need to clean these mussels better. The tomato garlic broth was simple and delicious though. And the mussels were larger and more plump than some of the others I’ve had in DC.
