Fried calamari – Barracuda Sushi

Fried calamari - Barracuda Sushi
Montery baby squid tempura with sriracha aioli. Happy hour $5
Barracuda Sushi, San Francisco CA

These were good – perhaps a little greasy, but they had a nice flavor from the batter. And I like the taste and slight heat of the sriracha aioli.

Spicy edamame – Barracuda Sushi

Spicy edamame - Barracuda Sushi
Soy beans sauteed with shoyu, sesame oil and togarashi. Happy hour $4
Barracuda Sushi, San Francisco CA

These weren’t very spicy, but they were definitely flavorful! The togarashi (dried chili pepper seasoning) added a yummy flavor and texture on the outside of the edamame.

Green Envy roll – SUSHISAMBA

Green Envy roll - SUSHISAMBA

Wasabi pea crust, tuna salmon, asparagus, aji amarillo – key lime mayo. $13
SUSHISAMBA, Las Vegas NV

Green Envy roll - SUSHISAMBA
I liked everything about this unique sushi roll except for the wasabi pea crust. It was hard and crystallized and scary to eat! I don’t think it added too much flavor either. If they wanted to keep it green, they could have used regular ground dried wasabi peas instead.

El Topo roll – SUSHISAMBA

El Topo roll - SUSHISAMBA
Salmon, jalapeno, shiso leaf, fresh melted mozzarella, crispy onion. $14
SUSHISAMBA, Las Vegas NV

El Topo roll - SUSHISAMBA
This was a fun sushi roll with lots of textures. I’ve never had a roll with melted fresh mozzarella before so that was different. It was warm and creamy and the fried onions gave it more flavor and crunch. I think the sauce was sriracha based and spicy. Very good!

Soy sauce - SUSHISAMBA

Giants roll – Miyabi Japanese Cuisine

Giants roll - Miyabi Japanese Cuisine
Filled with spicy sake (salmon) and cucumber, topped with avocado and fish roe (eggs). $12.95
Miyabi Japanese Cuisine, San Francisco CA

Named after the San Francisco Giants baseball team (I assume), this roll gets its Giants orange from the spicy tuna inside and the fish eggs on top. It was good, but I wish the sake was spicier!

The Castro parklet in the morning. The tables and chairs are still chained up in this corner parklet, awaiting the roaming pack of naked locals to take a seat, hehe!

Double hamachi roll – Miyabi Japanese Cuisine

Double hamachi roll - Miyabi Japanese Cuisine
Filled with hamachi and cucumber, topped with hamachi, avocado and sesame. $12.95
Miyabi Japanese Cuisine, San Francisco CA

This was just ok, nothing special. It wasn’t exciting or exceptional fresh tasting. Overall, I was a little underwhelmed by the food here.

Green mussels – Miyabi Japanese Cuisine

Green mussels - Miyabi Japanese Cuisine
Three pieces of mussels with house spicy sauce, served with lemon slices. $2.95
Miyabi Japanese Cuisine, San Francisco CA

Mmm, I liked these because there was at least some spice in the sauce. You don’t often see green mussels on menus, mostly black PEI mussels, so I had to try them. You couldn’t taste much of the mussels themselves because of the sauce but they were meaty and tender.

Katsuo tataki – Miyabi Japanese Cuisine

Katsuo tataki - Miyabi Japanese Cuisine
Seared bonito tuna with bonito flakes and ponzu sauce. $10.95
Miyabi Japanese Cuisine, San Francisco CA

This was ok. I thought it was going to be a warm dish so I was a little disappointed when it turned out to be a cold one. It was also messy looking with all the toppings thrown on and there was way too much ponzu sauce everywhere.

Edamame – Miyabi Japanese Cuisine

Edamame - Miyabi Japanese Cuisine
Boiled green soy beans with salt. Standard. David always orders these for the table. I’m of the belief that they just take up tummy room that could be better filled with other yummy items. $3.50
Miyabi Japanese Cuisine, San Francisco CA

Maki sushi combo – Osho Japanese Cuisine

Project 365: Day 120

Not much to report today, just work as usual and the gym. I’m glad to be back into a routine with scheduled meals and quailty gym time!

Maki sushi combo Osho Japanese Cuisine
6 pieces California roll (imitation crab and avocado), 3 pieces kappa maki (cucumber), 2 pieces inari (sushi rice wrapped in sweet tofu skin). Served with miso soup, wasabi, pickled ginger, and soy sauce. $9.50
Osho Japanese Cuisine, San Francisco (SFO)

Maki sushi combo Osho Japanese Cuisine
In terms of sushi at an airport, this was ok. Which means it didn’t suck like most airport sushi. I particularly liked the inari – it was sweet and moist. In fact, none of the items were particularly dry, a common theme to most airport sushi.

Miso soup Osho Japanese Cuisine
Complimentary miso soup.

Soy sauce Osho Japanese Cuisine

Lounge roll – Dragonfly

Lounge roll Dragonfly
Crab, scallion, cucumber with tuna, hamachi and avocado “lounging” on top. $16
Dragonfly, Old San Juan, PUERTO RICO

Ugh, I guess it’s my own fault thinking that I could get decent sushi in Old San Juan. This was dry, sad and the sushi rice had a weird texture and flavor. You think an island would have fresh seafood, but that wasn’t the case.

Morro Castle San Juan
Morro Castle. That was some walk all the way up to the Castle! We didn’t go in, but it looked pretty impressive from the outside.
