Cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. Brunch buffet $29.99
Farmers Fishers Bakers, Washington DC
These were a pretty good start to brunch. Some of the pieces were a bit over-fried and dry, but I can’t deny a fried shrimp! 🙂

Bbq pork belly, poached egg, potatoes, smoked cream cheese, tomato aioli, $14
Heritage, Richmond VA
The service here was horrendous and so was this dish! It was truly a hot mess. The egg was the lightest poach I’ve ever seen. The albumen was still SO translucent and slimy. The smoked cream cheese (and there was a lot of it) had a horrible grainy texture and the flavor was overwhelming. Suffice it to say I was disgusted and will never return to this horrible place.

Whipped cream. $3.25
Dutch Eating Place, Philadelphia PA
Omg, this was really good! It was borderline on the sweet side for me, but there’s just something about hot, cinnamony apples surrounded in pastry that you can’t deny!

Eggs over medium, wheat toast. $4.95
Dutch Eating Place, Philadelphia PA
I’m still surprised (and alarmed) when I travel to a place that doesn’t ban the use of styrofoam. It’s such a horrible thing!
Anyway, back to the food. I didn’t like this very much, and not because of the styrofoam! The scrapple had an odd texture. Maybe this is how it’s supposed to taste and feel, but the other times I’ve had scrapple were at nice restaurants so maybe they had performed some culinary magic to deceive me into liking it. I love offal and such so I thought that this would be great – not the case. The toast was also lame and barely even toasted. The eggs just looked sad.

Boneless leg and thigh, wilted kale, buttermilk waffle, bacon jam. $14
The Wine Kitchen, Leesburg VA
This dish was a major fail! The waffles were so crumbly that they had no chance to stay intact with the fried chicken and the wilted kale. The kale was actually pretty tough so it wasn’t an easy green to put in a “sandwich” in the first place. The chicken was also pretty greasy. I definitely had diner’s remorse.

Collard greens, potatoes, sunny side egg. $12.99
The Fremont Diner, Sonoma CA
Of all the menu items we tried, this was probably my least favorite. Nothing really sang on this dish especially compared to the other plates. Even the brisket was just kinda “meh”.

Black pepper gravy. $6
The Wine Kitchen, Leesburg VA
These little bites were yummy and fun to eat. I liked the black pepper gravy too, but I think this ended up being to heavy to eat by myself. This would have been great to share with another diner. It tasted great though, but just too rich to eat the entire thing.

Sharp white cheddar, maple butter, frisee, on Italian feather loaf. $6.75
Northside Social, Arlington VA
This turnover was very good, and despite all that raw sugar on top, it didn’t taste overly sweet. I loved the plentiful amount of apple stuffed inside!

Stone ground grits with shrimp-sausage gravy, bacon, and green onions. $14.99
The Fremont Diner, Sonoma CA
Doesn’t this plate just look SO lovely and appetizing?! 🙂 Mmm, I love shrimp and grits and this dish was really good. The flavor of the gravy was intoxicating and the shrimp were nice and tender. Noms!

Sharp white cheddar, maple butter, frisee, on Italian feather loaf. $6.75
Northside Social, Arlington VA
This breakfast sandwich was very tasty and easy to eat. Or maybe I was just hungry and scarfed it down so quickly, hehe! I thought the Italian feather loaf was a good bread choice for the yummy fillings.

Scrambled eggs, fried oysters, arugula, and potatoes with remoulade and bacon. $14.99
The Fremont Diner, Sonoma CA
I thought the fried oysters were really soft and tender on the inside, and crispy crunchy on the outside – perfect! This was a hearty plate and everything was SO good!

With foie gras filling. Brunch five course tasting menu $55
Volt, Frederick MD
Mmm, this lil’ bite was delicious! What a fabulous way to kick off brunch. I didn’t get a lot of the chamomile flavor, which is fine since the foie gras really shined through.
