Angels on horseback – Anchor & Hope

Angels on horseback - Anchor & Hope
Fried oyster wrapped in bacon, with arugula and aioli. Happy hour, each $3.50
Anchor & Hope, San Francisco CA

This fast good, but even with the sauce the entire bite was really dry! Between the fried oyster and the dry bacon, this appetizer was in desperate need of some moisture. Maybe they just overcooked my order, but I would never put this lame bite on a must-eat list.

The complete galette – Galette 88

The complete galette - Galette 88
Buckwheat galette with emmentaler cheese, ham, soft cooked egg. Served with a mixed green salad. $10.50
Galette 88, San Francisco CA

I absolutely love savory buckwheat galettes and this one was SO tasty! I loved all the quality ingredients and the soft cooked egg was perfect. I will say that there was possibly too much cheese on the galette (like enough for an entire pizza), but I’m probably just complaining because I’ve been on a health kick lately. I would definitely go back for another!

Five spice braised English short ribs – Butterfly Restaurant

Five spice braised English short ribs - Butterfly Restaurant
Roasted butternut squash, scallion and pumpkin seed relish, sizzling rice cakes. $26
Butterfly Restaurant, San Francisco CA

I liked most things about this dish expect for those pesky rice cakes underneath. They were dry and then became soggy from the broth, so they just had an inconsistent and weird texture that didn’t work with anything else. The short ribs were very flavorful, but my pieces seemed to be super lean and not as tender as I would have liked. I liked the clean plating.

Pomegranate margarita - Butterfly Restaurant
Pomegranate Margarita: Tapatio tequila, freshed squeezed lime juice, agave nectar. $10

Oatmeal – The Sentinel

Oatmeal - The Sentinel
With milk, apple, blueberry, and brown sugar. $3.50
The Sentinel, San Francisco CA

I’m usually not a big oatmeal fan, but I must say that I really like the one at The Sentinel. I always have to remember to ask for just a little brown sugar though because they tend to pack it on. I enjoy the consistency of this version (not too runny) and the fruit taste great.

Salt and pepper fried calamari – Butterfly Restaurant

Salt and pepper fried calamari - Butterfly Restaurant
Ponzu cucumbers, toasted garlic, micro cilantro, tabasco remoulade. $11
Butterfly Restaurant, San Francisco CA

I liked the presentation of this dish, but the calamari itself was over-fried and super dry! Yuck. I couldn’t get over that part. The tabasco remoulade was also pretty bland for being advertised as having hot sauce. It didn’t have to be super hot and spicy, but it could have at least had more flavor.

Mascarpone cheesecake – Ad Hoc

Mascarpone cheesecake - Ad Hoc
TKO crust, pear compote, thyme anglaise. Pre fixe dinner $52 each
Ad Hoc, Yountville CA

If you’re wondering, TKO refers to large Oreo-like cookies made by Bouchon Bakery. So the crust of this dessert is made of them. And boy did I like this dessert! I wasn’t too sweet and the flavors were perfect. The pear and thyme were weird, and surprisingly good, flavor combinations that really elevated the smooth mascarpone cheesecake.

Seared steelhead salmon – Contigo

Seared steelhead salmon - Contigo
Roe, cured mojama, parsnip puree, brussels sprouts, capers, cava butter sauce. Tapas tasting menu
Contigo, San Francisco CA

This was an interesting dish for me. The combination of ingredients was one I hadn’t experienced before, and I’d never had mojama either. I actually thought it was dried prosciutto before I looked at the menu description again. The salmon was good, but I thought it was a bit overcooked. I liked the crispy skin though and the overall flavors of the dish were pleasant.

Cebiche mixto – La Mar Cebicheria Peruana

Cebiche mixto - La Mar Cebicheria Peruana
Happy hour $6
La Mar Cebicheria Peruana, San Francisco CA

This place is a mad house during happy hour! It’s filled with a mixture of tourists strolling the Embarcadero and the FiDi after-work crowd. I was able to squeeze in at the end of the bar and had a yummy (and nicely priced) snack before meeting my nephew for dinner down the street. The ceviche was good albeit small. I liked the assortment of ingredients and everything tasted really fresh. The pisco sour was also very tasty and much needed after a long day at work.
