Nanking sesame chicken – House of Nanking

Nanking sesame chicken - House of Nanking
Crispy chicken tossed in signature Nanking honey sauce with fried sweet potato and fresh chayote, served with rice. $7.75
House of Nanking, San Francisco CA

This chicken dish was SO good! I’ve had a lot of Chinese fried chicken dishes in my lifetime and this is the first one in a really long time that actually peaked my interest and was really tasty. Most other dish, no matter what sauce they use tend to taste similar and are usually on the greasy side. This dish put a new spin on the boring Chinese fried chicken dish by incorporating sweet potatoes and chayote. Their honey sauce was also very yummy and pretty unique. Noms!

Fried onioncake – House of Nanking

Fried onioncake - House of Nanking
Served with house peanut sauce. $4.95
House of Nanking, San Francisco CA

Mmm, this was delicious! I loved the runny peanut sauce, and the filling of the cake with a combination Chinese green onion and red onions was great. The exterior had a nice flour-y flavor and was fried nicely with little grease residue.

Chung qing wings – New Ming’s Restaurant

Chung qing wings - New Ming's Restaurant
Dried peppers, Sichuan peppers, garlic, ginger, scallions, sesame. $10.95
New Ming’s Restaurant, San Francisco CA

These chicken wings were certainly flavorful. They weren’t necessarily hot or spicy, but all the different peppers kind of numbed your mouth anyway. What I didn’t like was that the wings were all cut up and so there were bone shards everywhere. I thought I was going to cut the inside of my mouth by accidentally biting into some. This also wasn’t a great value since there weren’t that may wing pieces. I wouldn’t order these again.

3 item combo – New Ming’s Restaurant

3 item combo - New Ming's Restaurant
Szechuan eggplant, cumin pork, garlic chicken and fried rice. $6.95
New Ming’s Restaurant, San Francisco CA

Ugh, this lunch was probably one of the unhealthiest things I can find near work. It was super oily and salty, but I still somehow crave horrible Chinese food. Dear god, why?! The eggplant was an oil slick, the cumin pork had so much fat, and the garlic chicken was really greasy. And everything tasted like msg. Ugh.

General Tsao chicken – Jasmine Tea House

General Tsao chicken - Jasmine Tea House
Many of you know that I’m a huge fan of General Tso’s chicken even though it’s not even a real Chinese dish, hehe. Jasmine Tea House’s version is super tasty and they use large chunks of white meat chicken. They’re also only lightly battered and cooked perfectly so you’re not eating balls of grease, ew! This was a definite delivery win! $8.75

Price has gone up! And it looks like they might have changed the recipe, but it’s still delicious. 🙂

They put more broccoli in the dish now which I kind of like.

Shanghai soup dumplings – Dumpling Empire

Shanghai soup dumplings - Dumpling Empire
Xiao long bao. Six pieces $4.95
Dumpling Empire, South San Francisco CA

These were decent. The dumpling wrapper was on the thicker side, but at least the dumplings all stayed intact and they were not steamed in those lame aluminum cups. The flavors of the soup and pork filling were pretty good so I can’t complain too much. And the price was really good!

Green chives pancake – Dumpling Empire

Green chives pancake - Dumpling Empire
Fried Chinese pancake filled with green chives, glass noodles, and egg. $5.95
Dumpling Empire, South San Francisco CA

I liked the flavor of these pancakes, but the outsides were on the greasy side. I love the sharpness of the Chinese chives though. They also give you two whole pancakes so it’s a good value.

String bean beef – Red Jade

String bean beef - Red Jade
This dish was pretty tasty and not too greasy. I liked how they used larger cuts of beef so that they’re still recognizable as such. The beef was also properly cut in cross section for ease of chewing. And the was plenty of flavorful string beans. $8.95
Red Jade, San Francisco CA

General Tso's spicy boneless chicken - Red Jade
Requested using only white meat chicken. $9.50
Red Jade, San Francisco CA

I love General Tso’s chicken (depending on the restaurant). It’s deep fried chicken goodness usually covered in a sweet, spicy sauce. Red Jade’s version isn’t too heavily breaded so you can still see the pieces of chicken inside, and their sauce it pretty tasty!
