Summer berries – Volt

Summer berries - Volt
Blueberries and blackberries, buttermilk pudding, strawberry and mulberry sorbets, egg white vacherins. Tasting menu $95
Volt, Frederick MD

Yum, I really liked this dessert especially the berry sorbets. They had so much flavor and weren’t sugary sweet. I thought the little meringues were pretty cute and fun to eat too.

Seared rare ahi tuna – Tuscarora Mill

Seared rare ahi tuna - Tuscarora Mill
Soba noodles, wasabi, ginger, daikon, soy glaze. $12
Tuscarora Mill, Leesburg VA

This was disgusting! It tasted like they seared the tuna, cut it, then froze it again before serving. The texture was a combination of mushy and slimy, both of which you would never want with seared tuna. The accompaniments were also lame and ugly.

Papa burger – A&W

Papa burger - A&W
Two beef patties, two slices American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and A&W Papa sauce. $3.99
A&W, Charles Town WV

Wanna know something about me? I actually worked at an A&W in high school in Washington state, lol! I know a lot of disgusting things that happen in the fast food world, but it doesn’t stop me from eating there. This brings me back, hehe. I will say that I do like that A&W still serves it’s larger burgers in a box and doesn’t squish them and wrap them in the paper. This burger was decent, but I do love their Papa sauce. 🙂

Crab cake – Ford’s Fish Shack

Crab cake - Ford's Fish Shack
Remoulade sauce. $8
Ford’s Fish Shack, Ashburn VA

This crab cake was delicious and different from the usual crab cakes I’ve had. The lump crab pieces were quite large, and the cake was loosely formed and very tender and juicy. I also liked the remoulade sauce, but thought that the market price for the crab cake was a little high for the small portion.

1/4 chicken (white meat) plate – El Pollon

1/4 chicken (white meat) plate - El Pollon
With fried yuca and onion and tomato salad. $5.99
El Pollon, Ranson WV

Mmm, I love Peruvian rotisserie chicken. This was very flavorful, but the breast meat was a bit dry. That’s what I get for opting for the white meat. I loved the sides though, especially the onion and tomato salad. The fried yuca was also good and not greasy.

Wagyu beef short rib – Volt

Wagyu beef short rib - Volt
Marinated in shio koji, pureed salsify, pan roasted salsify, grilled leeks. Tasting menu $95
Volt, Frederick MD

Eh, this wasn’t my favorite dish. The short rib tasted fine, but I wasn’t a fan of the accompanying flavors. The pureed and pan roasted salsify components were too much. Or maybe I’ve discovered that I’m not a fan of salsify (which probably isn’t true). Anyway, I guess you can’t like everything…

Duck rillette – Tuscarora Mill

Duck rillette - Tuscarora Mill
Dijon, cornichons, caper berries, croustades. $7
Tuscarora Mill, Leesburg VA

Mmm, the duck rillette was very tasty and super rich. It was also nicely priced at what I thought was a low seven bucks. My cocktail was on the sweet side. Otherwise, I wasn’t too impressed by the restaurant. It seemed old and outdated, not in a good charming way, more in a tired and sad way.

Pasta bolognese – Volt

Pasta bolognese - Volt
Calamari and pepperoni, roasted tomatoes, ricotta cheese cavatelli with squid ink, grated parmigiano reggiano. Tasting menu $95
Volt, Frederick MD

This pasta was very rich and delicious. I like that it was unconventional with the seafood additions of calamari in the sauce and squid ink in the pasta. These ingredients really changed the flavor and feel of the bolognese. This was about the point when I was getting VERY full and started wondering how many more dishes were left, hehe.

Pork belly hash – Market Table Bistro

Pork belly hash - Market Table Bistro
Breakfast potato hash, summer squash, zucchini, herbs, hickory glaze, poached eggs. $18
Market Table Bistro, Lovettsville VA

This hash was really good! There were full on chunks of fat in the hash (without any meat attached) which was delicious but unexpected. I couldn’t eat all of them though because it was too rich. The dish was tasty and I loved the seasonal vegetables incorporated into the dish. Noms!

Cow creamer - Market Table Bistro
Cow creamer. Very cute, especially against the black tabletop.
