Pizza and wings lunch buffet – Pizza City II

Pepperoni pizza and buffalo wings - Pizza City II
Pepperoni pizza and buffalo wings.
Pizza City II, Ranson WV

Ugh, both the pizza and wings weren’t very good, but the lunch buffet price was super cheap and it was unlimited food so what can I say? I ate these two plates worth of food and that was it. I wanted to save some calories for better quality food later. ๐Ÿ™‚ I did like that they had a few flavors of wings to choose from though.

Baby back ribs – Carolina Kitchen

Baby back ribs - Carolina Kitchen
Grilled bbq pork ribs with baked beans, homemade coleslaw and Cajun fries. Full rack $25
Carolina Kitchen, Washington DC

These ribs were decent. They were pretty salty, but I still liked that they lathered on the bbq sauce. They also weren’t as tender and smoky as I wanted. The fries weren’t crispy, but the beans were tasty.

Cornbread - Carolina Kitchen
Cornbread. Complimentary
These were dripping with butter, therefore delicious!

Special-dilla – California Tortilla

Special-dilla - California Tortilla
Jack cheese and blackened chicken, black beans and spinach, Served with sour cream and salsa. $7.39
California Tortilla, Ranson WV

I actually liked this. The grilled tortilla and the chicken were a bit dry but I liked the simplicity of it. There wasn’t any frou frou ingredients to get in the way.

Gyro wrap – John’s Cafe & Grill

Gyro wrap - John's Cafe & Grill
Thinly sliced beef and lamb, tzatziki stuffed in a grilled pita with lettuce, tomato and onions. Served with potato salad. $9.50
John’s Cafe & Grill, Ranson WV

This wasn’t the best gyro, but it fulfilled my gyro craving. The meat was definitely previously frozen and pre-sliced, but it was a good size and had plenty of tzatziki which I love. But why does everyone use styrofoam around here?!

Sashimi style fluke – Volt

Sashimi style fluke - Volt
Caught in Rhode Island, fennel bulbs, avocado puree, grapefruit vinaigrette with smoked garlic shiro, fresh lemon thyme and flowers. Tasting menu $95
Volt, Frederick MD

Wow, this dish was so fresh and inventive. I loved the combination of flavors and ingredients. You can tell that there was a lot of technique that went into preparing this dish, but it also ate very easily. That’s why I love Volt. The food is delicious without being overly complicated and weighty. There’s a familiarity with each bite that keeps the comfort and joy that you often lose with complicated plates. Volt’s dishes are deceptively simple because each bite is exciting and familiar at once.

Super spider roll – Sala Thai

Super spider roll - Sala Thai
Soft-shell crab tempura, asparagus, avocado, masago, topped with eel sauce. $12
Sala Thai, Washington DC

I think it’s kinda weird that an “authentic” Thai restaurant offers a large sushi menu, but whatever… Anyway, the roll wasn’t very good. It was dry and pretty bland. The unagi sauce was also a weird consistency.
