Crostini – Fiore Caffe

Salmon, mascarpone and capers / romesco and roasted zucchini / sauteed mushrooms and pecorino.
Fiore Caffe, San Francisco CA
These weren’t my favorite. The bread was really hard and dry and the toppings were as refined and flavorful as they could have been.
Tortilla de patata – Aatxe

Truffle butter hollandaise, chorizo bits. Restaurant week dinner $65
Aatxe, San Francisco CA
This tortilla was fine, but it was the truffle butter hollandaise and chorizo bits on top that put it over the top. Mmm!
Lamb vindaloo – Curry Boyzz

Lamb cooked with potatoes in special sauces. $8.99
Curry Boyzz, San Francisco CA
I liked the flavor of this lamb vindaloo, but I thought that perhaps the sauce was just a tad too thick. There also wasn’t very much lamb in there.

Plain naan layered with butter. Each $1.49
Soft-cooked egg – Aster

Crispy potato, salmon roe, bacon vinaigrette. Four course menu $59
Aster, San Francisco CA
This was one of the more well-rounded and developed dishes from our Aster visit. The egg was beautifully cooked and presented, and everything tasted delicious together. I actually felt comforted by this dish unlike some of the others during the evening.
Black pepper and water buffalo casonsei – Flour + Water

With hazelnut, celery root and sage. Pasta tasting $70
Flour + Water, San Francisco CA
Mmm, these little pillows were perfection! The water buffalo filling was so good and I loved the aggressive black pepper flavor. The rich sauce and fun textures put this pasta over the top. Noms!

Black and tan sorbet – Thirsty Bear

Irish style lager and Irish stout wort spun sorbet. Paired with SOMA coffee porter. Restaurant week dinner $40
Thirsty Bear, San Francisco CA
These sorbet were super bitter, especially the darker one which I could not enjoy. The lighter sorbet was bearable, but not by much. I like the coffee porter though.
Langosta – Californios

Lobster soup, Chinese celery, chile morita caldo. NYE tasting menu $175
Californios, San Francisco CA
Wow, this was delicious! The broth was fairly light, but packed with flavor. The poached lobster was delicate and perfectly prepared. Noms!
Carpaccio di manzo – Fiore Caffe

Raw thin sliced beef eye round with capers, shaved parmigiano, extra virgin olive oil, topped with fresh parsley and lemon. $11
Fiore Caffe, San Francisco CA
This was good. It was simple and rustically presented. It could have benefited from a bit more salt, but otherwise was tasty.
Trumpet mushrooms a la plancha – Aatxe

Delicata squash, mahon cheese, potato migas. Restaurant week dinner $65
Aatxe, San Francisco CA
This wasn’t my favorite. I don’t the the mushrooms and delicata squash went well together. They had opposing flavors and textures that just didn’t vibe. Hmm…
Hokkaido squash soup – Aster

Persimmon, pepita, marrow. Four course menu $59
Aster, San Francisco CA
Meh, this was forgettable. I liked the texture of the pureed squash soup, but it was a bit thick they didn’t pour enough on top to fill the edges. This dish looked more like roasted persimmon topped with a squash sauce rather than a proper soup.
Tajarin with brown butter giblet – Flour + Water

Nettle and cippolini agrodolce. Pasta tasting $70
Flour + Water, San Francisco CA
I’ve never heard of tajarin pasta before, but I guess it’s a thinner version of tagliatelle. Anyway, the best part of this dish was the brown butter giblet sauce – omg, SO good! Combined with the grated cheese on top, it was the best combination of sweet and salty.
