Buttermilk-brined chicken – Dish

Buttermilk-brined chicken - Dish
Potato puree, local green beans, natural jus. $18
Dish, Charles Town WV

The chicken was very tender and flavorful, but it certainly was a small serving. And OMG, both the chicken and mashed potatoes were so effing salty! I thought I might develop a kidney stone if I finished it – gross! The five pieces of green beans didn’t help things out either. Maybe this is God’s way of telling me that I’ve been overeating lately, lol!

Lunch chimichanga – Mi Degollado

Lunch chimichanga - Mi Degollado
Soft flour tortilla with beef tips, topped with cheese, lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guacamole. Served with Spanish rice and beans. $6.95
Mi Degollado, Charles Town WV

Ugh, I really didn’t want to come back here, but some of the guys I was working with wanted to try it for their first time. Suffice it to say they were not impressed and I wasn’t either for my second attempt. The food was below average and the workers aren’t even Mexican, lol! We thought that they were likely from Central America instead.

Catfish fillet – Mountain View Diner

Catfish fillet - Mountain View Diner
Breaded and fried. Served with soup, mashed potatoes and gravy, and cole slaw. $12.95
Mountain View Diner, Charles Town WV

Wow, this was SO much food! I actually couldn’t believe how much food came out with my one order. And there were 4 pieces of fried catfish on my plate! It’s no wonder why the other diners in the restaurant were on the heavier side… The food was actually very tasty and well cooked, but it was more than enough for one person. I tried eating as much as could but ended up leaving quite a bit on my plate. This place is definitely a good home-cookin’ type of restaurant though.

Little cheeseburger – Five Guys

Little cheeseburger - Five Guys
“All the way”, no mustard and with jalapeño peppers and green peppers. $4.69
Five Guys, Ranson WV

This burger was good, but I prefer In-N-Out. Yes I’m from the west coast, but this burger wasn’t as juicy and flavorful as an In-N-Out burger. And we actually have Five Guys on the west coast now so the comparison is warranted.

French fries - Five Guys
French fries. Regular $3.39
Definitely not better than In-N-Out.

Brussels sprouts salad – Dish

Brussels sprouts salad - Dish
Toasted walnuts, bleu cheese, roasted shallot puree, apple gastrique. $9
Dish, Charles Town WV

I actually liked this salad. It was simple and delicious, but maybe a little too sweet. The brussels sprouts were nice and firm, but they need a little more finesse with their overall flavors.

Margarita cocktail - Dish
Margarita. $5
Also too sweet!

Fish taco fresh deal – California Tortilla

Fish taco fresh deal - California Tortilla
Two blackened fish tacos with cabbage slaw, lime, cilantro and chipotle sour cream. Served with a side of guacamole and chips and a drink. $8.97
California Tortilla, Ranson WV

These tacos were surprisingly decent. I didn’t know what to expect since it was my first time at a California Tortilla, but I thought they were pretty good. The fish tasted fine (although they were a bit small) and the cabbage slaw was nice and bright.

Classic reuben sandwich – Royalicious Bagel Bakery

Classic reuben sandwich - Royalicious Bagel Bakery
Corn beef with sauerkraut, Swiss cheese and Russian dressing on grilled marble rye.
Royalicious Bagel Bakery, Charles Town WV

Mmm, this sandwich was delicious and really big! The corned beef tasted great and they certainly didn’t skimp on the meat or the sauerkraut. I also liked the marbled rye bread.

Appetizer sampler – Applebee’s

Appetizer sampler - Applebee's
Mozzarella sticks, spinach and artichoke dip, cheese quesadilla grande, boneless wings. $12.89
Applebee’s, Charles Town WV

This was disgusting and I’m actually ashamed I ordered this to eat all by myself. Hey, I like a greasy appetizer as much as the next guy, but everything on this plate was really low quality and tasted horrible. I definitely didn’t finish it and swore I wouldn’t return to Applebee’s during my trip.

Chicken and fish combo – Long John Silver’s

Chicken and fish combo - Long John Silver's
Served with fries, 2 hushpuppies, and drink.
Long John Silver’s, Charles Town WV

I was a bit confused when I received this because I couldn’t tell which piece was fish and which was the chicken. They looked exactly the same. And oddly enough, they tasted the same too, and were disgustingly greasy. I don’t think I’ll ever order this again or even return to a Long John Silver’s. Even the hushpuppies were super greasy. At least the fries were good.

Tom kha gai – Thai Thani Kitchen

Tom kha gai - Thai Thani Kitchen
Thai hot and sour soup with coconut milk, chicken, galangal, mushrooms, red onion, tomato, kaffir lime leaves, and lemongrass. Sprinkled with cilantro and green onion. $8.95
Thai Thani Kitchen, Seattle WA

This soup was very good and a much better value than the fresh rolls (although they still skimped on the chicken). It was very flavorful with a bit of a kick.
