Oyster duo – WK Hearth

Oyster duo - WK Hearth
Baked with bacon onion jam. Raw with melon granita and lemon. $8
WK Hearth, Purcellville VA

This was gross! The texture and flavor of the raw oyster with the granite made me dry heave a little. The warm oyster was a little better, but I think the quality of the oysters was off in the first place. Not a good dish.

Remarkable Sparkles flight - WK Hearth
Remarkable Sparkles flight. $13
Carte Noire, Charles Organ, Chardonnary, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, NV, Champagne, France.
Prosa, Meinklang, (Rose) Pinot Noir, 2012, Burgenland, Austria.
Puianello, Lambrusco, NV, Lombardy, Italy.
Mmm, these wines were VERY different from each other and different from the types of sparkling wines that I normally drink. The last one was super sweet but it was still enjoyable to drink. I always like trying new things.

Catfish fillet – Mountain View Diner

Catfish fillet - Mountain View Diner
Breaded and fried. Served with soup, mashed potatoes and gravy, and cole slaw. $12.95
Mountain View Diner, Charles Town WV

Wow, this was SO much food! I actually couldn’t believe how much food came out with my one order. And there were 4 pieces of fried catfish on my plate! It’s no wonder why the other diners in the restaurant were on the heavier side… The food was actually very tasty and well cooked, but it was more than enough for one person. I tried eating as much as could but ended up leaving quite a bit on my plate. This place is definitely a good home-cookin’ type of restaurant though.

Fish taco fresh deal – California Tortilla

Fish taco fresh deal - California Tortilla
Two blackened fish tacos with cabbage slaw, lime, cilantro and chipotle sour cream. Served with a side of guacamole and chips and a drink. $8.97
California Tortilla, Ranson WV

These tacos were surprisingly decent. I didn’t know what to expect since it was my first time at a California Tortilla, but I thought they were pretty good. The fish tasted fine (although they were a bit small) and the cabbage slaw was nice and bright.

Chicken and fish combo – Long John Silver’s

Chicken and fish combo - Long John Silver's
Served with fries, 2 hushpuppies, and drink.
Long John Silver’s, Charles Town WV

I was a bit confused when I received this because I couldn’t tell which piece was fish and which was the chicken. They looked exactly the same. And oddly enough, they tasted the same too, and were disgustingly greasy. I don’t think I’ll ever order this again or even return to a Long John Silver’s. Even the hushpuppies were super greasy. At least the fries were good.

Halibut and fava bean – Le Pigeon

Halibut and fava bean - Le Pigeon
Fava bean puree, ancho chile puree, summer squash and porcini salad, porcini mushroom puree.
Le Pigeon, Portland OR

I generally don’t get excited over fish dishes, but this was delicious and refreshing. The halibut was cooked perfectly – still tender and flavorful. The other ingredient and sauces were amazing with the fillet. Omg, I loved the ancho chile puree especially. Noms!

Fresh cod and chips – Horner’s Corner

Fresh cod and chips - Horner's Corner
Locally caught rock cod in house beer batter, thick cut Kennebac fries and red cabbage slaw, aioli. $15
Horner’s Corner, San Francisco CA

Ugh, these fried fish were REALLY greasy, yuck! And they seemed over fried too. I think the oil temperature must have been off. The fries were ok, but I was expected them to be thicker cut as indicated by the menu description. They seem “normal” cut to me. Am I wrong? This was definitely not worth the price.

Bulleit bourbon Manhattan - Horner's Corner
Bulleit bourbon Manhattan on the rocks. $10
I love single large ice cubes!

Scallop – Le Pigeon

Scallop - Le Pigeon
Jackfruit, seaweed, lovage, oyster dressing. $16
Le Pigeon, Portland OR

Omg, this was my favorite meal of my Portland trip! We sat at the counter and were entertained by watching the cooks the entire evening. Every dish was perfect and had a surprising and delicious combination of ingredients, textures, and flavors.

These scallops were delicate and lovely. I loved the random accompaniments that actually worked perfectly to create a perfect bite every time. Noms!
