Conference desserts – Hyatt Regency Crystal City

Peach melba and chocolate pecan tart - Hyatt Regency Crystal City
Peach melba and chocolate pecan tart.

I attended a 2-day conference in Crystal City and they would put out snacks and desserts after lunch before the afternoon sessions began. The desserts weren’t that great, but they were a pleasant distraction from the conference at hand. Hehe!

S’mores doughnut – Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken

S'mores doughnut - Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken
Chocolate cake donut with chocolate glaze, graham cracker crumble, toasted marshmallow. $2.50
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, Washington DC

This donut was really moist, but I really wasn’t into it. I guess I was in the mood for a regular fried donut and not the cake variety. I liked the look of it though.

Prez Obama burger – Good Stuff Eatery

Prez Obama burger - Good Stuff Eatery
Applewood bacon, onion marmalade, roquefort cheese, horseradish mayo sauce. $7.25
Spike’s Village fries topped with thyme, rosemary and sea salt. Snack $2.59
Good Stuff Eatery, Crystal City VA

Mmm, this burger was delicious! I won’t say that it was better than In-N-Out because it was very different and hard to compare. I loved the bun and the patty and toppings were great. I especially liked the horseradish mayo sauce. The fries were also amazing and I loved that they have a variety of dipping sauces that you can try.

Volcano & Dynamite wasabi rolls – Raku

Volcano & Dynamite wasabi rolls - Raku
Volcano: shrimp tempura, spicy tuna, eel, avocado, cucumber, roe, spicy mayo, eel sauce. $9
Dynamite Wasabi: tuna, salmon, yellow tail, wasabi fish roe. $8.50
Raku, Washington DC

These rolls were ok. The sushi rice was really dry though so I couldn’t get over that part. I liked the flavors of both, but they were difficult to eat because of the crappy rice.

Fried chicken – Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken

Fried chicken - Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken
Breast and wing. 2 piece (white) $6
Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, Washington DC

This chicken was pretty tasty. The large breast was a bit dry in parts, but I really liked the flavor of the coating and it was fried relatively well. It was a little greasy, but not overly so.

Longhorn cheddar mac and cheese – Hill Country Barbecue

Longhorn cheddar mac and cheese - Hill Country Barbecue
8 oz. $5.25
Hill Country Barbecue, Washington DC

Omg, this was the cheesiest, most oozy, rich and delicious mac and cheese I’ve had in a long time! I almost want to say that it was TOO rich to finish but it tasted so good that I couldn’t stop myself. I mean, the cheese was still molten even after walking back to the office – good lord! And this is why I work out, people! LOL

Peach pie ice cream – Nitro’s Creamery

Peach pie ice cream - Nitro's Creamery
On Fridays, there’s a small farmers market outside the Ronald Reagan Building. It was a warm day so I decided to grab one of these ice creams. Since I’m a lover of everything peach, I opted for the peach pie flavor. It was fun to watch her make the ice cream and it tasted great. It had peach bits, peach puree, and pie crumbles. Mmm!

Blanquette de veau – Monsieur Benjamin

Blanquette de veau - Monsieur Benjamin
Veal, Paris mushrooms, pearl onions, steamed potatoes. $28
Monsieur Benjamin, San Francisco CA

This dish lacked the warmth and comfort that comes with good French food. Don’t get me wrong, it tasted fine, it was beautifully plated, and the technique was there but it didn’t draw any emotion from my while I ate. Sad…
