Voodoo doll – Voodoo Doughnut

Voodoo doll - Voodoo Doughnut
Raised yeast doughnut filled with raspberry jelly topped with chocolate frosting and a pretzel stake.
Voodoo Doughnut, Portland OR

When your friend and even the hotel bartender tell you that Voodoo is OVERRATED, you should really listen! Unfortunately, I fell for the hype and got deservedly burned.

Voodoo doll - Voodoo Doughnut
The donuts were a huge letdown. The dough was nothing special and actually unevenly cooked, and the frostings were at a sweetness level only fit for little kids. There is absolutely no finesse with these donuts and are definitely not worth the atrocious wait and disinterested service. Fail!

Brioche bread pudding – Tartine Bakery

Brioche bread pudding - Tartine Bakery
Huckleberry and nectarine. Bowl $7
Tartine Bakery, San Francisco CA

This pic doesn’t make the bread pudding look very sexy, but it was delicious! The bakery experience, on the other hand was painful. I didn’t mind the line because that’s just normal, but then when I get to the register, that’s when they inform me that their credit card reader is down and are only taking cash. Lame! They could have at least informed everyone before we ordered our food! Ugh, fail.

Bacon havarti breakfast sandwich – Boudin Bakery and Cafe

Bacon havarti breakfast sandwich - Boudin Bakery and Cafe
With egg and served on parmesan crusted sourdough bread. $5.25
Boudin Bakery and Cafe, San Francisco CA

Mmm, I’m always pleasantly surprised with the breakfast sandwiches from Boudin. The egg has a great consistency and doesn’t taste microwave-y like those from other places. And the sourdough bread is delicious!

St. Honore cake – Dianda’s Italian American Pastry

St. Honore cake - Dianda’s Italian American Pastry
Circle of puff pastry at its base with a ring of pâte à choux piped on the outer edge, small cream puffs dipped in caramelized sugar, base filled with crème chiboust and finished with whipped cream. $38.75
Dianda’s Italian American Pastry, San Francisco CA

Mmm, this beautiful cake was so delicious! Everyone was delighted by it at work. It’s so different from a regular sheet cake and such a novelty that it’s sure to please. The rum flavor permeated throughout and was very yummy. A definite winner!

Cobb salad – Boudin Bakery and Cafe

Cobb salad - Boudin Bakery and Cafe
Chiffonade romaine lettuce, Point Reyes blue cheese, crispy applewood smoked bacon, all natural diced chicken, chopped egg, diced tomato, red wine vinaigrette dressing. $8.69
Boudin Bakery and Cafe, San Francisco CA

I liked/hated that they include a good amount of bacon in this salad. I guess that if you’re really trying to eat a healthier lunch, perhaps a cobb salad isn’t the best option. It was pretty good though.

Palet and Chocolate croissant stack – Craftsman & Wolves

Palet and Chocolate croissant stack - Craftsman & Wolves
Palet: praline, concord grape, nasturtium. $6.50
Chocolate croissant stack. $3.50
Craftsman & Wolves, San Francisco CA

I recently met a visiting food blogger for a little dessert break along the Valencia Street corridor in the Mission. Wattwurmnashi has a beautifully well-written blog with amazing food photographs – check it out! As you can see from her blog entry of our Craftsman & Wolves visit, her food photographs are far better than my lil’ iPhone pics, lol. And it’s especially amazing since she snaps her pics so skillfully quick! Anyway, I had a great time getting to know Wattmurmnashi and continue to enjoy her fabulous blog.

Now, as far as these desserts, one was definitely better than the other. The palet was very good with a nice mix of flavors and textures (and it was pretty snazzy looking too). The chocolate croissant stack was a big disappointment. It was super dry and not that tasty.
