Faux shark’s fin soup – Benu

Faux shark's fin soup Benu

With dungeness crab, Jinhua ham, and black truffle custard. Pre fixe dinner $180
Benu, San Francisco

I liked this. A bit on the tasty side (from the black truffle custard), but still flavorful. I don’t know what all the fuss is about shark’s fin (or faux shark’s fin in this case). It doesn’t taste like anything – it just has a cartilaginous texture. The Jinhua ham broth was rich and the dungeness crab helped to lighten it up. Good dish, but not my favorite.

Homemade glutinous rice cakes – Benu

Project 365: Day 107

Yay, I’m back in San Francisco! And apparently, the weather has been frickin’ amazing. It’s the early evening and it’s still very warm outside. Ah, how I’ve missed you, my home! Whenever I get back from a trip, I always crave certain food. The first thing I did when I got back was order delivery from Mission Chinese Food. I needed something spicy and with punch-you-in-the-face flavor, and MCF always does it for me.

Honestly, I shouldn’t be eating again since I had a large and delicious brunch buffet at Wicked Spoon in The Cosmopolitan this morning. I was hungry again at the airport so I had a Whopper Jr. from Burger King. Argh, I can’t believe I did that!

Wow, this dish was amazing! It was like a pumpkin gnocchi. The texture was different, but the flavors were warm, delicious, Italian. I loved that this wasn’t what I expected when I read the description. “Glutinous rice” doesn’t conjure up Italy in my mind, but I was pleasantly surprised. Everything work perfectly together and the flavors were absolutely spot on! Noms!

Salumi, cheese and tapenade

Project 365: Day 7

Omg! I am SO tired. I biked almost 15 miles to work this morning even though my legs were still tired from squats a couple days ago. Then Rapunzel, Papa Chang and I took a 30-minute bike ride before lunch. And then I biked to Bart after work and back home from the Bart station near my house. I was so hungry all day because I burned so many calories from biking. Maybe I’m over doing it on the exercise. I keep thinking, “Cruise, cruise, cruise!” I even had a dream about the cruise last night!

I’ve got to say that taking the midday ride was really fun and beautiful! It was nice to get out of the office, get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. I love being outside and I’m glad that some of my coworkers do too!

Salumi cheese and tapenade

Prosciutto, salame al tartufo, taleggio cheese, reblochon prefere de fromi cheese, mixed olive tapenade, fig and olive tapenade, multiseed flatbread.

After I had an early dinner, I was still super hungry so I made myself a nice snack plate to munch on while catching up on DVR. I love truffle flavored salami – I bought these from Whole Foods. Actually, everything on this plate is from Whole Foods, lol!

Natural 1/2 rack lamb – ANZU

Rack of lamb ANZU
Grilled lamb served with Zinfandel essence and wasabi mustard sauces, truffle scalloped potatoes, and a mushroom custard topped with sauteed carrots and zucchini.
ANZU, San Francisco

I ordered the lamb cooked medium, and I must say that they did a wonderful job!  It had a great crust on the outside and was nice and tender on the inside, just how a lamb rack should be.  It had a wonderful flavor and paired well with the Zinfandel and wasabi sauces.  I must note that the scalloped potatoes had an overwhelming truffle aroma and taste. A little truffle oil goes a long way – remember that when cooking with it at home!  The mushroom custard was a nice surprise accompaniment since it wasn’t on the menu.
