Salami focaccia – Caffe Bene

Salami focaccia - Caffe Bene
$3.95
Caffe Bene, New York NY

Ugh, this isn’t what I really wanted to eat, but it was convenient and I was starving. The focaccia wasn’t very good and the toppings were over re-heated and hard. The service here was also laughable. Nobody new what they were doing and they were SO frickin’ slow!

Rum raisin cronut – Dominique Ansel Bakery

Rum raisin cronut - Dominique Ansel Bakery
Half croissant, half doughnut pastry. $5
Dominique Ansel Bakery, New York NY

Rum raisin cronut - Dominique Ansel Bakery
Well, the long line was hell (I think I waited for about an hour), but I’ve got to admit that this cronut was pretty amazing! I don’t even like rum raisin, but I still really liked this pastry. (They only feature one flavor each month.) I was struck at the perfect construction of this thing. The layers were perfectly cooked (moist and fluffy on the inside and crisp and flaky on the outside) and yet it still allowed for the oozy filling goodness in between. NOMS!

Rum raisin cronut - Dominique Ansel Bakery
It takes up to 3 days to make one of these things, and I must say that their process certainly makes a near perfect pastry. I sometimes wonder if I’d wait in line again for this thing. Perhaps with the right flavor, I would. Who am I kidding, I definitely would! 🙂

Truffle tots – Tonic East

Truffle tots - Tonic East
Ketchup. $8
Tonic East, New York NY

I didn’t read good things about the food here, so I thought I’d play it safe with tater tots since I wasn’t really hungry anyway. You really can’t mess up fried tots, right? Anyways, these were actually pretty good and they give you plenty of them so it’s great for sharing.

Uh, a great price when there’s no bottomless!

Chocolate flan – Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Chocolate flan - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Rich chocolate cake, almond brittle, chocolate caramel. 3 course brunch $19
Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

This flan was really different. It had a really firm texture which I wasn’t a fan of. It was more like a hardened custard than a beautifully soft flan. They place it on top of the chocolate cake and drench it in sauce so this is a very thick and rich dessert. It was way too sweet and sugary for me so I wasn’t a fan.

Mexican benedict – Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Mexican benedict - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Crispy masa shells, black beans, chorizo, poached eggs, chipotle hollandaise. 3 course brunch $19
Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

This tasted pretty good, but damn it was rich and filling! The masa was thick and dense and combined with the chorizo and hollandaise, but was a recipe for definite heartburn. Thank god I have a stomach of steel! Like I said, it tasted good but I think I could have done with just one of them.

Mimosas - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Traditional Mimosa. $2
Prickly Pear Mimosa: cava prickly pear puree, orange juice. $5

Flautas de pato – Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Flautas de pato - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Shredded bbq duck, queso oaxaca, mole negro, pickled onion. 3 course brunch $19
Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

These duck flautas was pretty tasty. I loved the combination of the bbq sauce, tart pickled onions, and rich mole negro. I wasn’t a fan of the wrapper that they use though. It was too soft and greasy.

Guacamole - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Smashed to order avocados, tomato, onion, serrano, fresh lime, served with tortilla chips. 3 course brunch $19
Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

This guacamole was pretty tasty, and I liked the vibrant green color. I also thought that the nineteen dollar brunch option was great since you could choose almost anything off their regular menu.

Benedictberg – DGS Delicatessen

Benedictberg - DGS Delicatessen
Poached eggs, DGS smoked salmon, latkes, sumac hollandaise. $12
DGS Delicatessen, Washington DC

This was another disappointment. The latkes were over-fried and greasy, and the eggs were poached hard. They may have been sitting under the warmer for too long(?). That would make sense since the service was SO slow. I wasn’t a fan of the sumac hollandaise either.

Bottomless mimosa - DGS Delicatessen
Bottomless mimosa. Yeah right! We would finish a glass but the server was never around to give us a refill. They should really call it “bottomless mimosas if the server feels like taking the time to do his job”. #lame

Shakshouka – DGS Delicatessen

Shakshouka - DGS Delicatessen
Poached eggs, tomato and roasted pepper stew, grilled bread. $12
DGS Delicatessen, Washington DC

This certainly wasn’t what I expected. This was actually just baked eggs (not even poached) in some tomato and pepper sauce. It was kinda weird and had an odd  flavor that I couldn’t quite pin down. I wouldn’t order this again.
