These were greasy and salty, but I still like it – lol! I’m a sucker for Chinese eggplant dishes. The saucier, the better!

“Chantilly” ice cream. 3 course tasting menu (earlybird) $35
Restaurant Gwendolyn, San Antonio TX
This was not good! The funnel cake was SO greasy and it just soaked into everything – yuck! I couldn’t get over the excessive amount of grease in this dessert (and that huge inedible leaf was annoying).

Brandy creme anglaise, bacon jam. 3 course tasting menu (earlybird) $35
Restaurant Gwendolyn, San Antonio TX
This cake was pretty darn tasty and the bacon jam was a surprisingly wonderful addition. The cake wasn’t too sweet which was perfect, and the vanilla ice cream just brought everything together.

Fancy siphon coffee service.

Coffee. $6

Duck sautéed with spicy Mexican sausage, tomatoes, onions and topped with cabbage lime slaw. $14.95
Acenar, San Antonio TX
This tasted great. I loved the duck which I thought was an unexpected option for Mexican food. It was packed with flavor and quite filling. Mmm…

Mexican rice and refried beans.

Lone Star. $4

Kimchi, avocado, charred green onion crema, pickled pork skins. $s
The Monterey, San Antonio TX
This was a hot mess! It was just a bunch of crap thrown together on a big fried chicharron and they really didn’t taste good together. #fail

Mornay, shiitake mushrooms, Swiss chard, truffle oil. 3 course tasting menu (earlybird) $35
Restaurant Gwendolyn, San Antonio TX
This dish was beautiful and delicious! The mac and cheese was obey, gooey and absolutely perfects. The quail was fun and everything tasted great! Noms!

Achiote-marinated pork slowly roasted in banana leaves and served over cilantro rice. $15.75
Acenar, San Antonio TX
This was packed with flavor and the pork was very tender and delicious. I also liked the cilantro rice and black beans.

Chips and salsa. Complimentary

Acenar hand shaken margarita: El Jimador Reposado tequila, Gran Gala, Patron Citronage, fresh lime juice, and house made simple syrup. $10

Huitlacoche butter. $7
The Monterey, San Antonio TX
Mmm, I loved this! Which was surprising because everything else we tried wasn’t so successful. Huitlacoche definitely has a flavor that isn’t for everyone, but I like it. It’s on the bitter side and it tasted great with the salt flakes and butter. Noms!

Local lamb and citrus terrine, chicken liver mousse, and jalapeño sausage. Served with Brewer’s crackers, assorted pickled vegetables, coarse mustard, and strawberry clementine marmalade. Three-item $18
Cured, San Antonio TX
The charcuterie here is amazing! Everything is made in house and the quality is wonderful. The chicken liver mousse was definitely my favorite especially with a dollop of the marmalade on top. The bartenders were also very friendly and professional and make some killer cocktails.

Brewer’s crackers.

Cured: lemon thyme moonshine, ginger, in-house citrus bitters, cava. Happy hour $5

Roasted carrots, beurre blanc. 3 course tasting menu (earlybird) $35
Restaurant Gwendolyn, San Antonio TX
The finishing parsley and nasturtium leaves looked great on this dish. The flounder was tender and full of flavor, and the accompaniments worked well with the fish.

Kimchi butter, tzatiki, black lime. $11
The Monterey, San Antonio TX
This was kinda gross. The tendons were really tough and hard to eat, and the combination of kimchi butter and tzatziki was bad. I think we each tried a piece and left the remainder in the bowl.

Martinez Farms. 3 course tasting menu (earlybird) $35
Restaurant Gwendolyn, San Antonio TX
I loved this salad! The radishes were tasting and it had a great balance of fat, sweet, and tart. I also liked the large crouton, and the whole thing was dressed properly.
