Chicken asada super nachos – La Tortilla

Chicken asada super nachos - La Tortilla
Tortilla chips topped with grilled chicken, black beans, cheese, spicy salsa, guacamole and sour cream. $7.75
La Tortilla, San Francisco

Hmm, I wasn’t impressed with these nachos this time around. The chicken asada was on the dry side and kinda salty. Perhaps I should stick with the other protein options…

Chicken nachos – Pappasito’s Cantina

Chicken nachos - Pappasito's Cantina
With cheese, beans, jalapeños, pico de gallo and sour cream. $12.99
Pappasito’s Cantina, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

This was kinda gross. The nacho cheese had that weird slimy texture and the chicken was super dry. The pico de gallo salsa was also really bland. I had a few bites and threw the rest away. I didn’t want to risk an angry bathroom visit on my next leg, lol!

Chocolate flan – Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Chocolate flan - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Rich chocolate cake, almond brittle, chocolate caramel. 3 course brunch $19
Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

This flan was really different. It had a really firm texture which I wasn’t a fan of. It was more like a hardened custard than a beautifully soft flan. They place it on top of the chocolate cake and drench it in sauce so this is a very thick and rich dessert. It was way too sweet and sugary for me so I wasn’t a fan.

Mexican benedict – Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Mexican benedict - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria
Crispy masa shells, black beans, chorizo, poached eggs, chipotle hollandaise. 3 course brunch $19
Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

This tasted pretty good, but damn it was rich and filling! The masa was thick and dense and combined with the chorizo and hollandaise, but was a recipe for definite heartburn. Thank god I have a stomach of steel! Like I said, it tasted good but I think I could have done with just one of them.

Flautas de pato – Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Flautas de pato - Fuego Cocina y Tequileria

Fuego Cocina y Tequileria, Arlington VA

These duck flautas was pretty tasty. I loved the combination of the bbq sauce, tart pickled onions, and rich mole negro. I wasn’t a fan of the wrapper that they use though. It was too soft and greasy.

This guacamole was pretty tasty, and I liked the vibrant green color. I also thought that the nineteen dollar brunch option was great since you could choose almost anything off their regular menu.

The green tomatillo salsa was too sour for my taste, but the darker roasted salsa was delicious!

Jalisco shrimp enchiladas – La Sandia

Jalisco shrimp enchiladas - La Sandia
Oaxaca cheese, corn, rajas, crema fresca, plantains, cilantro rice, avocado.
La Sandia, McLean VA

I really wasn’t as into this was I though I would be. I really liked the plantains and the cilantro rice was fine, but the shrimp enchiladas left me wanting more. The enchilada sauce was bland and boring and the shrimp were over cooked. Thank god for the crema and avocado make it a little interesting. And the good margarita to wash it all down with!

De La Casa Margarita - La Sandia
De La Casa Margarita: tequila, citrus, on the rocks. $8

Chips and salsa - La Sandia

These were really addicting and the salsa was delicious!

Rockfish aguachile – MXDC Cocina Mexicana

Rockfish aguachile - MXDC Cocina Mexicana
Cucumber, chile pequin, red onion, lime. Happy hour $6
MXDC Cocina Mexicana, Washington DC

This wasn’t my favorite because the dressing was way too salty! It did have nice flavors with a spicy kick and the fish (what little of it there was) was tender. There was an anise or five spice flavor that I couldn’t quite place, but it was unexpected and enjoyable.
