Bun bo hue – Pho Express

Bun bo hue - Pho Express
Hue style spicy noodle soup with beef. $7.95
Pho Express, San Francisco CA

This soup was very tasty and nice and spicy. Oftentimes, restaurants will shy away from being too spicy but this had a decent level of heat. I was surprised by the spaghetti noodles though. I guess I’ve never seen that before with these soups, and I’m just used to rice noodles.

Chicken pho – Urban Picnic

Chicken pho - Urban Picnic
Rice noodles, onions, cilantro, basil, bean sprouts, lime, lemongrass broth. $8.95
Urban Picnic, San Francisco CA

This pho was ok. I guess it just tasted a little too healthy for me. I like my pho broth with more flavor and fat. The soup was quality though, I’ll give it that.

Combination pork sandwich – Que Huong Vietnamese Deli

Combination pork sandwich - Que Huong Vietnamese Deli
Banh mi. $4
Que Huong Vietnamese Deli, San Francisco CA

According to online sources, what used to be Irving Deli is now Que Huong so I’m gonna count this as a check off the 7×7 list. I love banh mi sandwiches in San Francisco because they tend to be super delicious and so cheap. This sandwich was no exception. The bread was crisp and fresh and the pork was delicious. I will say that it was more fatty than other pork combo banh mi’s I’ve tried, but I didn’t mind.

Tai, nam, gau, gan, sach pho – Pho 75

Tai, nam, gau, gan, sach pho - Pho 75
Slices of eye-of-round steak, well-done flank, fat brisket, soft tendon, and bible tripe. Served with rice noodles, bean sprouts, jalapeno, lime and basil. Regular bowl $6.95
Pho 75, Arlington VA

I liked this pho. I don’t usually order the soft tendon or tripe, but I thought why not this time around. Might as well go all the way. They tasted fine, but I’m still not a fan of their textures. The meat broth was good though and I liked all the chopped green onions and cilantro in there.

Pho ga – Pho 75

Pho ga - Pho 75
Chicken noodle soup. Served with rice noodles, bean sprouts, jalapeno, lime and basil. Regular bowl $6.95
Pho 75, Arlington VA

It was nice to have a really delicious and cheap meal this time around. The broth at Pho 75 was pretty good (not the best I’ve had, but pretty good). This is a basic restaurant with quick service, and they only take cash. It’s pretty popular but they seem to get the people through quickly.

Tai gan pho – Pho Than Brothers

Tai gan pho - Pho Than Brothers
Rice noodle soup with eye-round steak and soft tendon. Medium with extra meat $7.20
Pho Than Brothers, Seattle WA

This pho was pretty good. I thought that the flavor of the broth could have been a little more developed. The soft tendon was good, but I didn’t finish it. The best part of the meal is the complimentary cream puff though. I’ve always liked their delicious cream puffs!

Hawker bowl – Bun Mee

Hawker bowl - Bun Mee
Fried egg, shredded papaya, lotus root relish, pickled carrots and daikon, topped with Vietnamese herbs, spicy mayo, and fried shallots over brown rice and grilled pork. $11.75
Bun Mee, San Francisco CA

Mmm, this was a great, creative Vietnamese salad. The combination of ingredients was great and it was pretty hearty for a salad. I’m a sucker for eggs on top of everything so they had me there. I especially liked the lotus root relish because it was very different.

Saigon dip – Fog City

Saigon dip - Fog City
Shaved roasted pork, spicy pickled vegetables, chili aioli, cilantro, pho dipping broth. $17
Fog City, San Francisco CA

This sandwich was good, but really vanilla. The flavors were too subtle and even the pho broth was bland. The ingredients read like you’re gonna get a party in your mouth, but it quickly became a snoozefest. 😦
