Shanghai kurobuta pork dumpling – Yank Sing

Shanghai kurobuta pork dumpling - Yank Sing
Xiao long bao. $12.95
Yank Sing, San Francisco CA

Mmm, these were really good! The wrapper was thin and delicate and the soup and pork filling were delicious. There were probably some of the better XLB I’ve had in a while!

Wild boar scissor cut noodles – M.Y. China

Wild boar scissor cut noodles - M.Y. China
Bean sprouts, scallion, wood ear mushrooms. $14
M.Y. China, San Francisco CA

Have I expressed how much I hate this restaurant? Well I do. This dish was on the 7×7 list and if they ever place another M.Y. China on a future list, I’ll happily skip it. The service and food here are just crap and I refuse to support them any longer.

Bulleit bourbon Manhattan cocktail - M.Y. China
Bulleit bourbon Manhattan. $17
Really?! Seventeen dollars for a Manhattan?! Ugh, can this restaurant closed down already?

Wok seared beef – M.Y. China

Wok seared beef - M.Y. China
Sichuan peppercorns, arugula. $18
M.Y. China, San Francisco CA

This was our waitress’ suggestion, probably because it was one of the more expensive options. Well, it was horrible! The beef was SO frickin’ dry and bland. The sauce was pretty much seared onto the beef and made it really hard to chew and eat. And serving this gross, dry beef over a sad pile of arugula was another lame choice by this lame restaurant. The beef was only luke warm so there wasn’t even enough heat to wilt the arugula so everything just stayed dry.

Steamed rice - M.Y. China
Steamed rice. $2

Wild boar lettuce cups – M.Y. China

Wild boar lettuce cups - M.Y. China
Red pepper, scallions, crispy noodles. $9
M.Y. China, San Francisco CA

Oh dear god, why did we come back here?! These lettuce cups were just sad and boring. It was like a typical beef stir fry thrown on some lettuce with some fried rice paper shred tossed in. The service was just as shitty this time around, the food was marginal and over-priced, and my old fashioned tasted like a disgusting piece of sweet-ass candy (and you know how much I love my bourbon drinks)! It was murky and off-color and tasted like crap. I seriously hate this place.

Old Fashioned cocktail - M.Y. China
Old Fashioned: bourbon, gum, angostura bitters, orange peel. Happy hour $7

Salted fish and minced pork rice in clay pot – Utopia Cafe

Salted fish and minced pork rice in clay pot - Utopia Cafe
With bok choy and ginger. $7.95
Utopia Cafe, San Francisco CA

Well, this was different! But it was pretty good (and salty). The minced pork was super tasty and the salted fish pieces were a nice addition, but I think the ginger is what really made this dish.

Shanghai fillet – Jasmine Tea House

Shanghai fillet - Jasmine Tea House
Marinated flounder fillet fried to golden brown topped with pine nuts and light sweet and spicy sauce. $11.95
Jasmine Tea House, San Francisco CA

Ugh, this was not the best item to order for delivery. By the time it made it to my place, the battered exterior was soft and soggy from the sauce and being steamed from the closed container. The sauce itself was very good either. I definitely wouldn’t order this again (even for dine in).

2 entree combo plate – Panda Express

2 entree combo plate - Panda Express
Honey walnut shrimp and Golden Szechuan fish with chow mein. $9.79
Panda Express, Cabazon CA

Ugh, I feel sick just knowing that I consciously decided to eat at Panda Express and I chose probably the worst entree items for you! My greasy Chinese food craving got the best of me but I really shouldn’t have eaten here, but the options were limited. Anyway, I felt disgusting after eating this (and no, I didn’t even begin to finish all of it).

Henry’s special – Henry’s Hunan Restaurant

Henry's special - Henry's Hunan Restaurant
Scallop, shrimp, chicken, onion, scallions, bamboo shoot, green bell pepper. $11.95
Henry’s Hunan Restaurant, San Francisco CA

This was ok. I appreciated that the scallops and shrimp were tender and not overcooked, but the sauce was pretty standard. I think it’s Henry’s “special” because it has a combination of proteins and not because it has a special sauce. In fact, the sauce was somewhat bland and boring. The dish was also on the greasy side.

Brown rice - Henry's Hunan Restaurant
Brown rice. $1.50
