Half dozen oysters – The Walrus and the Carpenter

These little oysters were delicious! I sat at the oyster bar during happy hour and this place was packed. I waited over 30 minutes for a seat to open up but it was worth it. I will say that there was a little bit of shell debris in some of my oysters, but that was easily forgivable for their freshness. The service here was also top notch. The guy behind the bar was great as was the hostess!

On an unrelated note, this is the BEST Wednesday EVER! SCOTUS has struck down DOMA and Prop 8. Love prevails and San Francisco is in celebration!

West coast oysters – Anchor & Hope

West coast oysters - Anchor & Hope
Lil’ Skookum WA, Fanny Bay BC, and Kumamoto WA. $17.50
Anchor & Hope, San Francisco CA

I met some co-workers out for happy hour at Anchor and Hope one day. The bar area was packed during that time of day, omg! I tried a few things, but by the time David arrived happy hour was over and we still wanted more oysters. We ordered a sampling of west coast oysters because we prefer the smaller sized variety from that area. I remember that they tasted pretty good, but they weren’t properly cleaned and there were a few shell shards in the half shell. Lame.

Raw oysters – Lot 7

I usually prefer the smallest oysters, but in this grouping I think the Shigokus were the best tasting. Omg, I’m finally making my way up the raw oyster chain, lol!

Broccoli beef cheek – Mission Chinese Food

Broccoli beef cheek - Mission Chinese Food
Whole beef cheeks with gai lan (Chinese broccoli), poached oyster, smoked oyster sauce, sesame seeds, served with steamed rice. $13
Mission Chinese Food, San Francisco CA

I really enjoy the taste and texture of Chinese broccoli – it’s delicious! There’s a slight bitterness to this dish that I like. It’s not for anyone on a diet though. The whole beef cheeks are super fatty and, therefore, tender and yummy. The poached oysters and smoked oyster sauce add even more textures and flavors to this plate. Noms!

"Oysters and Pearls" - The French Laundry
This has got to be one of the restaurant’s most popular dishes. It’s small, but it packs a punch! The caviar was tasty and I loved the texture, and the oysters were firm but weren’t overcooked.

Gotta love the small mother of pearl spoon they provide to eat this delicious morsel.

Oyster, pork belly, kimchi – Benu

Project 365: Day 103

Today I flew to Las Vegas to attend a work conference which starts tomorrow. I’ll admit that I’m not a big fan of Vegas as a vacation destination. I don’t like the majority of tourists and everything is ridiculously overpriced. Vegas is a place that I can’t truly relax, even poolside. There’s inevitably going to be a bunch of douche-y college kids (and adults for that matter) partying it up WAY too hard in a trashy way. Oh well, what can you do? To each he’s own. It makes for AMAZING people watching though. Besides the conference, I’m going to try and focus on the food to keep me busy. I don’t have any plans tonight but I’ll probably hit up Secret Pizza at The Cosmopolitan for a quick bite, then head to a local bar off The Strip to relax and take the edge off.

Benu, San Francisco

Every dish at Benu has so many ingredients that it’s often difficult to know what every component is or how it’s incorporated into the dish. This was the second course, and I’m gonna say that it was one of my favorites! This small bite was presented on a wooden pedestal and you’re urged to eat it quickly because the warm filling might melt through the thin cellophane-y container. As proof of my ignorance, I’m still not sure where the kimchi was in this, hehe.

Saturday oyster outing – Tomales Bay Oyster Company

Project 365: Day 45

I finally made it to Tomales Bay for a weekend oyster social with some co-workers. My Babygirl sidekick and I arrived shortly after 10 am to find that Huff and his bf had snagged a perfectly located picnic table near the oyster stand. It was a nice relaxing day hanging out with friends and eating delicious oysters and clams. Although the weather was a bit chilly at times, the sun eventually came out and warmed us all up. Ah, this is why we live in the Bay Area, folks!

Papa Chang brought fixins’ to make these delicious oyster shooters using the TBOC “small” oysters. The oysters are topped with a quail egg, tobiko, and ponzu with green onions.

Tomales Bay Oyster Company

TBOC oysters are Pacific oysters farmed at Preston Point in Tomales Bay. The “small” oysters cost $15 per dozen or $50 for a bag of 50.

quail eggs

Quail eggs are so cute! But you need a steady hand to peel away the inner layer, which is tricky when you have wet, oyster fingers. 🙂

imitation crab sushi

Kelly and Brent brought these delicious sushi snacks! And I’m told that they’re super easy to make. It’s a sheet of crispy nori (seaweed), topped with broiled imitation crab mixed with sour cream and mayonnaise, rice, avocado, tobiko, and sriracha sauce. The perfect bite between oysters. NOMS!

Tomales Bay Oyster Company

There seemed to be about 4 different picnic areas, but I liked our location (on the bottom left of the pic). It was close to the oyster stand and we weren’t completely surrounded by other picnic tables.

Tomales Bay Oyster Company

This is a bag of the owner’s special reserve “Golden Nuggets” oysters which are $20 per dozen. These oysters were even smaller than the “small” TBOC oysters, and SO delicious!

Tomales Bay Oyster Company

This was the first time I’ve ever shucked an oyster, lol! I bought a random (but decent) oyster knife that I found in the seafood department at Whole Foods the night before. The guys had to coach me to start, but I got the hang of it. Look how clean I got my Golden Nugget!

Tomales Bay Oyster Company

I brought a mignonette made with champagne vinegar, shallots, lemon peel, parsley, salt, pepper, and sugar. It tasted great on the oysters!

Our table became quickly covered with oysters, clams, condiments and drinks.

Tomales Bay Oyster Company

We went through a LOT of bivalves! And this was only halfway through our day.

We were situated next to the pier. It’s great that they provide each picnic table with a small grill. We used ours to grill oysters, steam clams, and toast bread.

Chelsea gems oysters – Hog Island Oyster Bar

Of the two types of oyster we ordered, I like these better! These oysters had a great flavor and they were nice and small just the way I like ’em. These were perfect and I’d order them again in a heartbeat!

I thought that the two mussels attached to this one were cute!
