Roasted butternut squash, scallion and pumpkin seed relish, sizzling rice cakes. $26
Butterfly Restaurant, San Francisco CA
I liked most things about this dish expect for those pesky rice cakes underneath. They were dry and then became soggy from the broth, so they just had an inconsistent and weird texture that didn’t work with anything else. The short ribs were very flavorful, but my pieces seemed to be super lean and not as tender as I would have liked. I liked the clean plating.

Pomegranate Margarita: Tapatio tequila, freshed squeezed lime juice, agave nectar. $10
Tempted by the beef but wondering how English the recipe is. Ricecakes do (I agree) seem a strange accompaniment.
Yeah, I was confused by the “English” part too since this restaurant is Asian fusion, but I figured it was referring to the “English cut” of the short rib.
