Reward Roll: deep fried shrimp, soft shell crab, cucumber, crab roll topped with salmon and avocado with tobiko and unagi sauce. $12.95
Red Dragon: Unagi tempura and cucumber roll topped with spicy tuna, tomato, jalapeno, spicy miso sauce and tobiko-garlic chips. $14.95 Barracuda Sushi, San Francisco CA
The rolls at Barracuda are always pretty tasty and large, but you’d expect that at this above-average price point. I do like that they offer plenty of fried (tempura) roll options for my fat-craving self, lol! Their flavor combinations are also inventive and varied.
Panko breaded soft shell crab, jalapeno, avocado, masago, chili sauce, and spicy mayonnaise. Happy hour $5.95 Rikki Rikki, Kirkland WA
I really loved this roll (and for less than six bucks)! It was a nice change to have the soft shell crab covered in panko. Usually they’re tempura battered and fried. The panko gave it a different texture and flavor to the sushi roll. Noms!
House pickled shallots, red and black tobiko, black pepper. 10-course chef’s tasting menu $75 Roxy’s Cafe, San Francisco CA
What a great way to start a meal with great local ingredients that are beautifully presented and delicious to the taste! I really enjoyed the flavor combinations in this tiny bite and couldn’t wait to see what was next!
House red wine.

Cucumber, seven types of Japanese spice, umami tobiko, spicy crab and shiso. $13.50 Sushi Ran, Sausalito CA
I thought this sushi roll was really fun and delicious! I’d never had crawfish sushi before. The crawfish was cute and crunchy and I loved the umami tobiko and shiso. This roll had so many great flavors, noms!
I’m so glad that they don’t use cheap wouldn’t chopsticks.
Spicy tuna, jalapenos and cucumber topped with spicy tuna and tobiko. $11 Sushi Delight, San Francisco CA
I get the feeling that people generally discount Sushi Delight as a legitimate sushi restaurant because it’s attached to The Mint, but I like the place. They serve great tasting sushi at great prices. Yes, their rolls aren’t the most authentic but they’re not purporting to be. Despite what others think of this place, I’m a fan!
Scallop mixed with masago and spicy mayonnaise. Uramaki (inside-out) $9.50
Tokkuri Tei, Honolulu HI
Mmm! It’s a bit sad that one of the better rolls we had here was a simple spicy scallop roll. Some of the other items weren’t so fresh tasting, but maybe the spicy mayonnaise helped to cover up the old flavor. Who knows? I still enjoyed it.
